Bioversity International
Bioversity International is one of the Future Harvest Centre supported by Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It is an international scientific organization that seeks to improve the well being of present and future generations of people by enhancing conservation and the deployment of agricultural biodiversity on farms and forests. It aims to promote the greater well being of people; particularly poor people in developing countries, by helping them achieve food security, to improve their health and nutrition, to boost their incomes and to conserve the natural resources on which they depend. Bioversity International has its headquarters in Maccarese, near Rome, Italy, with offices in more than 20 countries and 300 staff worldwide. The institute operates through four programmes: diversity for Livelihoods, Understanding and Managing Biodiversity, Global partnerships, and Improving Livelihoods in Commodity-based systems. The working is based firmly on collaborating with others, leveraging its resources and abilities so that it gets good results and also helps to develop the capacity of those they work with and for.
Founded in 1974, Bioversity International, formerly know as IPGRI, is the world's largest international institute dedicated solely to the conservation and use of plant genetic resources. The Institute is funded mainly by developed-country donor and development agencies, but also by an increasing number of less developed countries.
