  Sharing Trans-boundary Conservation Issues
 

With an aim of making local stakeholders aware on the trans-boundary biodiversity conservation issues and sharing information with Indian Officials, a 14-member team comprising of government officials, civil society, and local communities visited Dudhuwa National Park, Katarniyaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Logga Bagga Forest of India from 10-13 January 2007. The visit was coordinated by Kanchanpur District Forest Office and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve Buffer Zone Management Committee with the support of WTLCP.

During the four days visit, the team had an opportunity of learning contemporary trans-boundary biodiversity conservation issues through interaction with Indian Forest officials and local communities.

   DFCC Meetings in Kailali and Kanchanpur
 
District Forest Coordination Committee meetings were held on 20 and 26 February in Kailali and Kanchanpur respectively. The meetings, participated by Federation of Community Forest Nepal, major political party representatives, District NGO Coordination Committee, Laljhadi Forest Conservation Coordination Committee, local NGOs, journalists and District Line Agencies including Women Development Office, Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve and District Livestock Service Office, appreciated the comprehensive plan prepared by WTLCP and unanimously endorsed the Annual Plan 2007.

A three days residential workshop was organised at Nagarkot from 30 January to 2 February to prepare detailed implementation plan of WTLCP for 2007. The meeting was participated by WTLCP staff and partners - MFSC, UNDP, SNV Nepal, WWF Nepal, NARC and LI-BIRD. The workshop developed Annual Work Plan-07 detailed implementation plan, both for fields and central management unit. Similarly, WTLCP/Bardia organised a detail programme implementation meeting with Buffer Zone Users' Committee, Buffer Zone Management Committee and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve for programme intervention.

   Participants at Agro-biodiversity Workshop,  Dhangadhi
LI-BIRD organised a local level stakeholder workshop in Dhangadhi on 23 and 24 January 2007. The main objective of the workshop was to create awareness and sensitise local level stakeholders about the importance of agro-biodiversity management in the western terai landscape complex. There were participants from Bioversity International, National Agriculture Research Council, UNDP, WWF, WTLCP, Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry of mid and far western regions, District Development Committee, District Agriculture Development Offices, District Livestock Service Offices of Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, Regional Agriculture Research Station of Khajura and Banke, Bardiya National Park and Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Buffer zone development committee and farmers from the agro-biodiversity implementation sites.
 
  Interaction with FECOFUN
WTLCP Field Manager Ek Raj Sigdel and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Basan Shrestha participated in an interaction meeting organised by FECOFUN in Kanchanpur District Forest Office on 19 February 2007. The objective of the meeting was to discuss various forest management issues between District Forest Office and FECOFUN Kanchanpur. During the meeting, some of the participants raised concern over the concept of collaborative forests management in Laljhadi area.
   Discussion on Chure Conservation
 
With the support of WTLCP-Dhanagadhi, NEFUG Kailali organised a one-day meeting to share Chure Mahotsab at Dhangadhi on 8 January 2007. A total of 25 participants, representing District Development Committee Kailali, District Forest Offices of Kailali and Kanchanpur, FECOFUN, Chure Community, among others attended the meeting. The meeting aimed to share the recent visit of Chure Mahotshab in Sarlahi by a team from far western development region. The meeting was chaired by Kailali Local Development Officer Mr. Bhujendra Bahadur Chhetri. Kailali NEFUG Chairperson Mr. Tika Datta Joshi made presentation on the Chure Mahotsab outcomes at the meetings. A discussion was held on the Chure Management issues and management strategies.
 
   WTLCP in Kanchanpur Festival
 
District Development Committee (DDC) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) jointly organised Kanchanpur festival from 15-17 Feb 2007 at Mahendranagar. The festival was mainly targeted to promote culture and nature based tourism in Kanchanpur district. WTLCP, in partnership with Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, National Trust for Nature Conservation, Buffer Zone Management Council of Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve jointly shared information in eco-tourism and conservation arena at the festival. Around 6000 visitors visited the festival.

   Working Arrangement Signed
 

A working arrangement was signed between Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation and Nepal Agriculture Research Council (NARC) on 7 February 2007 at NARC office. With the signing of the arrangement, it is expected to expedite implementation of agro-biodiversity activities in WTLCP working area.  

 
    PMC and PSC meetings held
 

A Project Management Committee (PMC) meeting was held on 12 January 2007 at MFSC to discuss on the Annual Work Plan and Budget for 2007 and Financial and Personnel Management Guideline.
Chief - Planning and Human Resource Division, MFSC, Dr Mohan Prasad Wagley chaired the meeting.

Similarly, Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting took place on 18 January 2007, which discussed on the major achievements of WTLCP activities of 2006 and WTLCP Annual Work Plan 2007. The meeting, chaired by the Secretary of MFSC Dr Udaya Raj Sharma, approved the Annual Work Plan - 2007.

 
   Training on FAMAS
Training on Financial Management Information System (FAMAS) was organised at Naragkot from 3-5 February 2007 for WTLCP finance staff. Mr. Dil Bahadur Bhujel from Computer Based Financial Engineering (CBFE) and Finance Officer Mr. Rabi Lamichhane facilitated the workshop.

  • With an aim of auditing WTLCP field activities, Chartered Accountant Mr. Krishna Acharya, Audit Officer Mr. Rishi B. Karki and Finance Officer Rabi Lamichhane visited Bardia, Kailai and Kanchanpur districts from 23-28 February 2007. WWF/TAL Project Manager Ram Prasad Lamsal also accompanied the team.
