Ranital in Suklaphanata Wildlife Reserve
Ranital in Suklaphanata Wildlife Reserve.


Ranital, a natural wetland with area of 16.41 ha, is located in the distance of 15 km southwest from Suklaphanata Wildlife Reserve headquarter at Majgaon.
The Tal is very important for the survival of storks, egrets, herons, eagles, ducks, geese, owl, elephant, tiger, deer, wild boar, and jungle fowl.

   Sustainable Livelihood Training  
With the support of WTLCP-Dhangadi, Dev Training Center Pvt. Ltd. organized four-day training on Sustainable Livelihood at Dhangadi in the first week of July 2007. A total of 19 people including 11 male and 8 female participated the training. The participants were Rangers from District Forest Office and Protected Area, WTLCP Community Motivators and Social Mobiliser, and community representatives.

   NTFP Management Training
 
Federation of Community Forest Users Nepal (FECOFUN) Kanchanpur organized a four-day training on Non Timber Forest Product (NTFP) Management for Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) of Daiji VDCs of Kanchanpur District from August 8, 2007. A total of 36 participants from 12 CFUGs participated the training. It is believed that the training would be helpful to enhance capacity of CFUG and NTFP cultivation and marketing.

   Gothala Education
 
Krishnapur Community Forest Coordination Committee, Kanchanpur organized on site training to local livestock herders at seven different places of Krishnapur VDC, Kanchanpur from 10 to 11 Aug 2007. A total of 306 participants were benefited from the training. Of the total, 32 were dalits and 29 were indigenous Tharu representing 10 CFUGs. WTLCP Community Motivators and other locals supported the training as Resource Persons.
 
   Annual Progress Review Workshop
 
The Far Western Forestry Regional Directorate organised an Annual Progress Review Workshop at Dhangadi on August 12, 2007. District Forest Officials, Protected Area Personnel, District Watershed Management Officers and Non Government Organisation representatives of the Far Western Development Region were converged at Dhangadi to share Annual Progress Report (2063/2064) of their respective offices. WTLCP Field Manager Mr. Ek Raj Sigdel made a presentation on the half-yearly progress of WTLCP Dhangadi Field Office in the workshop.

Similarly, Mid Western Forest Directorate organized an Annual Progress Review Workshop in Surkhet from 16 to 17 August 2007. WTLCP Field Manager Mr. Ashok Prasad Ojha participated and presented half-yearly progress of WTLCP Bardia Field Office.
 
   Elephant Conservation Action Plan Preparation Committee Meeting
Elephant Conservation Action Plan (ECAP) Committee meeting was held on 15 August 2007 at WTLCP, CMU. During the meeting, Resource Himalaya; Service Provider for the study; presented the study progress. The committee members provided valuable inputs for the development of ECAP plan.
   Trans-boundary Meeting
 
A Nepal-India joint meeting was held on 18 August 2007 in Bardia to discuss on trans- boundary issues. Nepalese Delegation was led by Mr. Shiv Prasad Nepal, Chief District Officer, Bardia, whereas Indian team was led by Mr. Shudhir Kumar Shrivastav, District Magistrate of Baharaich, India. The other Indian team members were DFO of Baharaich and Katarniyaghat, SSB commandant of Rupaidiya, Nanpara, chief of police of Baharaich.While Nepalese team included DFOs of Bardia and Banke, Chief Conservation Officer, Bardia National Park, Police Chief and Custom Chief. The meeting discussed issues on recent flooding on both sides, illegal activities prevailing in border sides and conservation related cross cutting issues.
   Handing Over Of Buffer zone Community Forests
 
Handing over of Buffer zone Community Forests were held at Chandev, Dekhatbhuli VDC and Kunda, Beldandi VDC in Kanchanpur on 23 August, 2007. Chief Warden of Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve Mr.Gopal Prasad Upadhayay handed over certificates of three Buffer zone Community Forests namely Shovatal Buffer zone Community Forest, Raniban Buffer zone Community Forest and Baijnath Buffer zone Community Forest to local communities/users. The devolution of responsibility for managing forests from park authority to local communities is expected to empower local communities to practice biodiversity friendly natural resource management and its wise utilization in participatory way for sustainable biodiversity conservation and livelihoods upliftment. The programs were witnessed by over 500 local people. WTLCP provided financial and technical support for the formation and handing over of community forests.

   Leadership Development Training in Kanchanpur and Kailali
 
Sustainable Environment Welfare Association Nepal (SEWA/Nepal), a Kanchanpur based NGO organized a three-day training on leadership development at Daiji Village Development Committee from August 22, 2007. A total of 22 people, representing the key positions of Community Forest User Committees participated the training. Similarly, Mohana Kailali Community Forest Coordination Committee, Kailali also organized a three-day training on leadership development at Geta Village Development Committee, Kailali effective from August 11, 2007. A total of 27 people from 16 different CFUGs benefited from the training.

   LCC Meeting
 
In order to establish intersectoral coordination mechanisms for integrated planning and management of biodiversity in WTLCP, LCC meeting was held in Nepalgunj on 24 August 2007 under the chairmanship of Regional Director of Mid-Western Forest Directorate, Surkhet. Other participants of the meeting were Chief Wardens of Bardia National Park and Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve, Acting Regional Director of Far Western Regional Forestry Directorate and Regional Advisor of Nepal Agricultural Research Centre in Khajura, Banke. WTLCP Field Managers of Bardia and Dhangadhi presentated Half Yearly Progress of Protected and Productive Landscape respectively. The meeting provided important suggestions and recommendations for further shaping WTLCP field level programs for harnessing efficient and effective results in landscape level conservation in WTLCP.

   Restoration Program
 
WTLCP Bardia supported Buffer Zone User Committees in restoring 117 ha of community forest, degraded land, religious sites, academic institutions, roadside areas and Chure area in Beldandi, Rautelibichuwa, Dodhara, Chandani, Jhalari, Manau, Patavar, Gola, Pashupatinagar VDCs.

A total of 105,075 plant species were planted. The main planted species were Dalbergia sissoo, Populas deltoids (Lahare Pipal), Eucalyptus spp, Tectona grandis, Calamus tenuis (Bet), Dendrocalamus spp, Syzygium spp (Jamun), Bombax ceiba (Simal), Anthocephalus kadamba (Kadam), Melia azadirachta (Bakaino) and Phylanthus emblica (Amala). Similarly, WTLCP Dhangadhi has supported to establish 8 community nursery and 3 District Forest Nurseries in the project intervention areas. A total of 589,945 seedlings were produced from the nurseries.

   Sustainable Forest Management Training
 
Mohana Kailali Community Forest Coordination Committee, Kailali organized a two-day training on sustainable forest management at two different places of Geta Village Development Committee, Kailali in 21-22 August, 2007. A total of 61 people from 11 different Community Forest User Groups of Mohana Kailali corridor were benefited from the training.
 
  Fire-line Maintenance
 

Krishnapur Community Forest Coordination Committee, Kanchanpur constructed 2 Kilometer fire-line in Ekata Community Forest of Krishnapur VDC in August 2007. It is expected that the fire-line will minimize the possibility of forest fire hazards, especially during summer season and will also contribute in conserving valuable biological resource of the surrounding areas.

 
   Coordination Meeting
 
WTLCP Field Manager and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer along with other staff members interacted with District Agricultural Development Office Kanchanpur for seeking their input on wetland maintenance and hatbazar establishment in Kanchanpur in August 2007. In addition, the staff members visited District Forest Office Kanchanpur to learn implementation status of WTLCP supported activities in Kanchanpur. Similarly, they visited DFO Kailali to discuss on the possibility of preparing community forest management operational plan for Phulbari and Godawari VDCs of Kailali.
 
 
   Public Private Partnership Training
 
A three-day Public Private Partnership training was organized in Kanchanpur from 29 Aug to 1 Sep 2007, targeting district line agencies, buffer zone institutions, local NGOs, chamber of commerce and town development committee. The training was designed to impart the theoretical and practical knowledge of various partnerships modalities. The training assisted to enhance skills of stakeholders on developing local partnership for environmental conservation, livelihoods promotion and micro infrastructure programs. In total, 20 participants, including three female completed the training program.

   Boat Construction
 
With the financial support of WTLCP, Sitaljhadi Community Forest User Group, Gadaria, Kailali constructed a wooden boat for Kharuwakhera River in Gadaria VDC of Kailali. The boat has the capacity of carrying 60 people at a time, the boat provided service for crossing the river mainly during rainy season.

   Wooden Bridge
 
With the financial support of WTLCP, a wooden bridge was constructed recently at ward # 1 of Gadaria VDC in Kailali District. Range Post Level FECOFUN, Phulbari coordinated the work of local communities to construct the bridge.
